ISO 50001
certification
Bureau Veritas Denmark A/S
Rising energy prices and stricter climate requirements are making energy management a strategic necessity. Many organizations are facing a critical turning point: either energy consumption must be significantly reduced, or a shift to sustainable energy sources is required. With an ISO 50001 certification, you can demonstrate that you are working systematically to reduce your energy consumption and CO₂ emissions.
Why choose ISO 50001 certification?
ISO 50001 is the international standard for energy management. It helps you to:
- gain a clear overview of your energy consumption
- set concrete targets for savings and reductions
- document your efforts to customers, partners, and authorities
- comply with legal and tender requirements – e.g. the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED)
- engage employees in integrating energy and climate considerations into daily operations
Investing in an ISO 50001 certification is a strategic decision that can deliver long-term financial benefits and strengthen a company’s position in the market, not least by making it less vulnerable to fluctuations and new regulatory requirements.
At Bureau Veritas Denmark A/S, you are certified to ISO 50001 in accordance with the guidelines of the International Accreditation Forum. We are UKAS-accredited and take a consultative approach to certification, meaning that we always base the process on your goals, culture, and industry.
Our advice to you?
We recommend that you choose your certification body carefully. A strong collaboration – and an auditor who understands your industry – is crucial to ensuring you gain real value from your investment.

ISO 50001 and executive order 1138/2025
Executive Order 1138/2025 is a regulation issued by the Danish Energy Agency, which entered into force on 18 September 2025 and sets requirements for companies depending on their energy consumption.
The executive order is part of Denmark’s and the EU’s climate objectives. It is intended to ensure that the largest energy consumers work systematically to reduce their consumption and climate impact – either through a certified management system or through an energy audit or climate audit.
With an ISO 50001 certification, a company can comply with Executive Order 1138/2025 while also gaining a strong management tool that helps reduce energy consumption.

Combine ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 certification
Many companies gain added value by combining ISO 50001 and ISO 14001. While ISO 50001 focuses on systematic energy management, ISO 14001 provides a broader framework for environmental management. Together, they create a strong, integrated management system that both reduces energy consumption and provides a clear view of your overall environmental impacts.
That’s why the combination makes sense:
- Energy consumption is one of the most significant environmental impacts – both in terms of CO₂ emissions and resource use. By integrating ISO 50001 into your overall environmental management, you can work more efficiently and holistically.
Stronger compliance. ISO 50001 helps you meet energy requirements in, for example, the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (EED) and national climate reporting, while ISO 14001 ensures documented control of environmental legislation. Together, they strengthen your position with customers, authorities, and ESG reporting.
Both standards follow the same High Level Structure, which makes it easy to build an ISO 50001 certification on top of an ISO 14001 certification in an integrated management system. They can be easily integrated into a single system with shared policies, audits, and management reviews.
With a combined certification, you gain a more accurate picture of your overall impact – and a stronger framework for driving meaningful improvements.

Frequently asked questions about ISO 50001 certification
-
Is ISO 50001 a legal requirement?
Certification to ISO 50001 is voluntary. However, the new Executive Order 761/2024 introduces stricter requirements for companies with an energy consumption above 10 TJ, where an accredited energy review or energy audit is mandatory. ISO 50001 certification can be used to demonstrate compliance with these requirements – while also strengthening your competitiveness in tenders and with customers who demand documented sustainability.
-
What does ISO 50001 certification cost?
The cost depends on your company's size, number of locations, and the complexity of your processes. In addition, you should budget for the internal resources needed to implement and maintain the system. However, many organizations find that the investment quickly pays for itself through lower energy consumption, reduced operating costs, and easier access to new markets. Feel free to contact us for a tailored, no-obligation quote.
-
How long does it take to become ISO 50001 certified?
If you already have a structured approach to energy management in place, the certification process can typically be completed within 6–9 months. If you are starting from scratch, you should generally allow 12 months or more, as the standard requires energy data, measurements, and an energy review. Many organizations choose to begin with a gap analysis, which provides a clear picture of their current position and highlights where improvement efforts should be focused. -
What are the benefits beyond compliance?
Beyond meeting legal and customer requirements, ISO 50001 provides a structured framework for reducing energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. It strengthens your ESG reporting and carbon accounting efforts, encourages employees to incorporate energy efficiency improvements into their daily work, and sends a clear signal to customers and business partners that your organization takes sustainability seriously.
-
Do we need ISO 50001 if we are already ISO 14001 certified?
If you are already certified to ISO 14001, you have a strong foundation in place. ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 are based on the same common structure (High Level Structure), making it easy to integrate energy management into your existing environmental management system. By combining both certifications, you gain a holistic management system that addresses both environmental impact and energy performance.
From Certification to Verified Sustainability Reporting
With verification of your sustainability report (CSRD), Bureau Veritas Denmark can independently verify your sustainability efforts as a natural complement to your ISO 50001 certification.
