ASC & MSC
certification
The World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) has helped establish a global certification scheme for the breeding of a number of important aquaculture species, including trout and salmon. The certification is called the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), and is a counterpart to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), which is one of the most widely used sustainability schemes in the fishing industry.
Become certified by ASC the aquaculture industry
Bureau Veritas Denmark A/S
The ASC standard is developed by the ASC Organization, an independent NGO (non-governmental organization). Their mission is to work towards sustainable farming and social responsibility by employing effective methods that create value for the entire value chain.
There is an increasing focus on sustainability and quality in the food production. Not only with consumers but also with authorities and legislators. This also applies to aquaculture, which supplies 50% of all aquaculture products worldwide. Sustainability cannot be achieved with a snap and places great demands to focus on health, animal well-being, food safety, food quality, environmental protection and social responsibility. All players, from producers, processors and wholesalers to distributors, must be able to prove their responsibility and contribution to the aquaculture industry.
The benefits of an ASC certification
- The ASC standard covers conditions such as; environment, ethical and social, animal welfare and economic conditions
- The ASC standard covers all types of production, recycling and flow-through systems - each fish has its own ASC standard
- With the standard, the company can document its systematic work on creating and maintaining a sustainable organization
Become chain of custody certified
(MSC CoC and ASC COC)
Bureau Veritas Certification Denmark A/S
MSC CoC is a scientifically based standard for the fishing industry, where ASC CoC is sustainable farming.
Fish is a very popular eating and demands for fish and other products such as fish oil are rising. This means that a number of fish species are overfished, and that the marine ecosystem is under severe pressure.
Consumers and authorities demand high quality sustainable products. Against this backdrop, the Marine Stewardship Council has prepared a sustainable fisheries standard: the MSC standard. Sustainable fishing ensures fish stocks, jobs in the fishery and consideration for the marine environment. The MSC labeling of the finished products allows consumers to separate sustainable products from conventional products.
The benefits of a chain of custody certification
- With the standard, the company can document its systematic work on creating and maintaining a sustainable organization
- It can be documented that the production of the finished fish product is from a sustainable resource and that the entire supply chain is sustainable
- An MSC CoC and ASC CoC certificate is known and recognized worldwide
- Bureau Veritas Certification can audit corporate sustainability work and issue an accredited certificate
