Biofuels & Biomaterials certification
To enhance circular performance, reduce their carbon footprint and minimize environmental impact, companies are increasingly shifting toward materials and energy sources that do not rely on fossil resources. As recycled-content alternatives and biofuels become more widely available, organizations need to maintain close control of their supply chains to ensure consistent quality, dependability, and sustainability.
In the new economy, the use of recycled materials in new products and their packaging plays a crucial role in demonstrating stronger sustainability performance compared to competing solutions. This development goes hand in hand with a worldwide shift toward renewable, low‑carbon sources of energy such as biofuels and biomass, which are essential in efforts to slowing climate change. At the same time, governments across the globe are introducing ambitious targets for recycling, the use of non‑virgin materials, and renewable energy, while providing tax incentives to companies that meet or exceed sustainability goals.
Voluntary schemes for biofuels management helps companies in demonstrating compliance with EU directives (e.g., the Renewable Energy Directive [RED]) and local legislation, and become eligible for fiscal incentives. Through certification under established renewable biofuels schemes including 2BSvs, ISCC and REDCert, and emerging schemes like KZR INiG, businesses can demonstrate their commitment to sustainable biofuels production and biomass processing and purchasing.

2BSvs: Access financial incentives and European markets
2BSvs is a voluntary scheme that helps farmers, biomass collection agencies, processors and traders to demonstrate compliance with EU directive 2009/28 (RED). The scheme ensures that biomass is used as raw material to produce biofuels, and requires auditing and verification along the supply chain. With certification to 2BSvs, companies can become eligible for financial incentives in EU member states and access European biofuels markets.
ISCC EU: Biomass certification with global reach
Bureau Veritas is an approved certification body for the ISCC EU voluntary sustainability scheme. Originating in Germany, ISCC certification covers all categories of biomass produced worldwide. With Bureau Veritas certification, companies can prove their compliance with EU regulations in relation to biofuels and biomass production.
ISCC Plus: Biomaterial certification
Voluntary certification to the ISCC PLUS provides recognition for recycled and bio-based materials that may be waste from other production processes but can now be used as feedstocks for polymers and biocomposite materials which can be used in a range of applications from packaging to textiles. ISCC PLUS certification provides traceability along the value chain and verifies that companies meet critical environmental and social standards in this emerging area.
REDCert EU: Complete supply chain certification
The REDCert EU regulations for biomass and biofuels cover all participants in the supply chain — from agricultural producers and biomass processors to fuel suppliers. As a recognized certification body for voluntary scheme REDCert EU, Bureau Veritas supports companies in demonstrating compliance with sustainability criteria for both biofuels and biomass.
RED II Directive: Staying up-to-date with biofuels certification
The upcoming RED II Directive from the EU required new national legislation by June 2021. To help our clients assure next-generation biofuel and biomass sustainability, Bureau Veritas provides expertise for updated and emerging certification and verification schemes worldwide.
KZR INiG: An emerging scheme for biofuels certification
With KZR INiG certification, companies can verify that the production of their biofuels, bioliquids and raw materials meets sustainability criteria. Certification from Bureau Veritas allows businesses to prove compliance with EU regulatory requirements for biomass and biofuels.
