How to prepare for ISO 9001:2026

ISO 9001 will be revised in 2026

A new version of ISO 9001 is on the way. The standard is under revision, and the updated version is expected to be published in September 2026. If you are already certified according to ISO 9001:2015, it is a good idea to stay updated.

Do you need an overview of the changes from ISO 9001:2015 to the upcoming ISO 9001:2026, and how to prepare your organization for a smooth transition?

Why is the ISO 9001 standard being revised?

ISO standards are constantly updated to ensure that they keep pace with developments in society, technology and business. This also applies to ISO 9001, the world's most widely used standard for quality management. The 2026 revision aims to ensure that the requirements remain relevant – even in a world where digitalization, increased demands for sustainability and complex global supply chains are taking on more and more importance.

ISO 9001 was originally scheduled to be revised in 2030. However, in the summer of 2023, the ISO organization decided to accelerate the revision. The decision was made because many stakeholders – both companies and experts – were calling for an updated standard that better reflects the reality in which they work today.

What changes in the ISO 9001:2026 version?

This is not a total overhaul, but there are several targeted updates:

  • Sharper requirements for the role of management, including focus on quality culture and ethical behavior
  • Clearer distinction between risks and opportunities
  • Climate and sustainability are now clearly integrated into the standard's initial requirements
  • Appendix A is expanded with more guidance on the individual points.
  • Terminology and structure are adapted so that the standard matches the latest common ISO structure (Harmonized Structure - previously called High Level Structure)

More than a million organizations in 180 countries around the world are certified to the ISO 9001 standard, and even more use it without being certified. This makes the quality management standard the world's most widely used standard, and now it is time for a review.

Transition period for all ISO 9001:2015 certified

When ISO 9001:2026 is released (expected in the end of 2026), all certified organizations will have a transition period – typically 3 years – to update their quality management system. Your current ISO 9001:2015 certificate will remain valid throughout this period. There is therefore no need to rush, but it may be advantageous to start preparations well in advance.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions about ISO 9001:2026

  • When will the new version of ISO 9001 be released?

The new version, ISO 9001:2026, is expected to be published in late 2026 – probably in September. It will first be released as a draft (DIS), followed by the final version.

  • Will our current ISO 9001:2015 certificate become invalid?

No. Your existing certificate will remain fully valid for a transition period – typically 3 years after the new version is released. You can therefore continue as before while you prepare for the transition.

  • What are the biggest changes in ISO 9001:2026?

The most important changes are about making the standard more up-to-date and strengthening the role of management. These include:

    • More focus on ethics and quality culture
    • Strengthened risk management
    • Integration of climate-related aspects
    • Updated terminology and clearer structure
    • Annex A with interpretations of key elements
    • Digital tools

The changes build on what you already have – it's about adjusting, not starting from scratch.

  • Do we need to implement a completely new certification?

No. The transition will take place as part of your next scheduled audit. You will need to update your quality management system to meet the new requirements – but this will be done in dialogue with your auditor and without additional bureaucracy.
