Europe in flames – a new framework for climate, sustainability, and inter-state trade

Mogens Lykketoft was chairman of UN’s general assembly when UN’s 17 sustainable development goals and the climate agreement were adopted in Paris. For 56 years he has also participated actively in the political debate in his role as for instance Denmark’s minister of taxation, minister for finance and foreign minister. Furthermore, he is chairman of the board in Energinet which owns and develops the electricity and gas grit in Denmark, and he has a wide knowledge about the green transition in Denmark, EU, Europe, and in the rest of the world.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has changed Europe. We must as citizens, companies and societies prepare ourselves for a new reality which has a substantial effect on our future. Climate. Energy supply. The green transition. Cybersecurity. Just to mention some of the areas which must be reassessed. But the political and security situation has also changed – for now and far into the future.

Mogens Lykketoft is going to analyse the situation and compare the latest events with other historical milestones like the second world war, the fall of the Berlin wall, NATO’s expansion in the East and Russia’s development since the end of the cold war. In addition to this, he will present his estimate of a new reality including the political energy situation, EU’s dependence on Russia, NATO’s and the UN’s roles. Finally, he will assess its meaning for Denmark and the forcing of the green transition.
