Regulation 761/2024 Mandatory energy management (environmental management), energy and climate audits

Regulation 761/2024, which came into force on 1 July 2024, sets out requirements for companies or for groups with several companies.

Which companies are subject to Regulation 761/2024?

energy review

Companies or groups with an energy consumption above 85 TJ must carry out an accredited energy audit as part of their energy management system (ISO 50001) or as part of their environmental management system (ISO 14001)

Companies or groups with an energy consumption between 10 TJ and 85 TJ must carry out either an accredited energy audit as part of their energy management system (ISO 50001), as part of their environmental management system (ISO 14001) or an energy audit.

All companies or groups with an energy consumption above 10 TJ must fill in a long form as a reporting to the Danish Energy Agency. The form contains detailed data from the energy review and a screening list with all potential improvement proposals/projects technically and financially feasible. Finally, the reporting also includes action plans regarding energy improvement based on the screening list. This form must be submitted for the energy review in connection with the energy management, environmental management or energy audit.

Climate audit

As a new requirement, all companies with an energy consumption above 10 TJ must also carry out a climate audit by August 2026. This audit must include detailed data from the Green House Gas (GHG) climate review of the company's own emissions (scope 1), a screening list of all potential improvement proposals/projects technically and financially feasible. Finally, action plans must be made regarding GHG improvements based on the screening list. We expect that the climate audit will be offered as part of an accredited service later this year, i.e. either as a supplement to energy management or environmental management.

Why you should focus on energy and climate audits

Even if your company is not subject to Regulation 761/2024, you should still consider focusing on energy management (environmental management) as well as energy and climate audits, as you will experience the following benefits:

  • Increased energy efficiency: businesses can reduce operating costs by identifying and implementing energy savings.
  • Improved climate accounting: companies reduce their climate footprint with a more systematic review of their climate accounts. This can help reduce CO2 emissions and promote the green transition.
  • Increased transparency: authorities and stakeholders get a better overview of the company's efforts and energy consumption, as reporting is a key element.
