The sustainable development goals open new doors for Wärtsilä Danmark A/S

Wärtsilä Denmark wishes to be a CO2-neutral company by 2030

Wärtsilä is a global company offering innovative technologies and lifecycle solutions for marine and energy markets with the goal of continuously helping their customers to improve their environmental and financial performance:

"Wärtsilä Denmark contributes to several of the UN's sustainable development goals (SDG) through our purpose and strategy, goals, policies, initiatives, innovative solutions and partnerships. We develop solutions together with our customers. These contribute to solving the societal challenges set out in the SDGs, and at the same time generate new business opportunities as in driving the decarbonisation of energy and marine sectors," says Jesper Bonde, CEO at Wärtsilä Denmark.

As Wärtsilä Denmark experiences an increasing focus on sustainability from the company's stakeholders, the company finds it crucial to be able to document its sustainability efforts.

ALL of the UN's 17 sustainable development goals are considered

It was no coincidence that Bureau Veritas assisted with their SDG certification. Wärtsilä Denmark checked out various options, but Bureau Veritas stood out in a particularly crucial area:

"The choice quickly fell on a SDG certification with Bureau Veritas. It was the idea of looking at all 17 SDGs in the certification process that attracted us, and which we could see made the most sense in connection with our ambitions. We also found Bureau Veritas very passionate about the SDGs, as a core value at Bureau Veritas is to make a difference in the world, so we felt very much at the same level of ambition," says Jesper Bonde.

Wärtsilä Denmark received their SDG certificate in 2021 and has thus been able to document sustainability principles based on the 17 SDGs and place decarbonisation high on the agenda for everyone in the supply chain.

"Wärtsilä Denmark's SDG certification manages to create sustainable rings in the water. The rings spread to supplier chains in their products and services for the shipping industry," says Ole Overgaard, auditor at Bureau Veritas, and continues:

"Wärtsilä Denmark has also managed to put the hard work of identifying the paradoxes, which affect everyone who wishes to work with the SDGs, on its internal agenda. And thus, make wisely balanced choices that create credibility in a broader perspective defined by the UN.

A strengthened Wärtsilä Denmark with increased competitive advantages

In addition to their own ambitions for a sustainable transition, the company's customers also have sustainability requirements. Wärtsilä Denmark experiences that the SDG certification provides a decisive competitive advantage in their dialogue with current as well as potential customers:

"With this certification, we have a tool, which we can use to achieve Wärtsiläs' “Set for 30” global goal of becoming a CO2-neutral company by 2030. In connection with our constant work with the SDGs, we have launched a number of activities in Wärtsilä Denmark."

"Sustainability is an integral part of our business and our strategy – it's becoming part of our DNA. We contribute to solving some of the world's biggest challenges and future-proof our business on this journey. We do this by taking a critical view of our own operation, while helping our customers with their necessary transition," says Jesper Bonde.

Wärtsilä is therefore looking forward to continuing its sustainable journey and the additional opportunities the SDG certification brings for the company:

"We definitely recommend reviewing the SDGs in depth like this. With the certification, we are continuously challenged and inspired in our daily work with the SDGs towards a better future.

"The way Bureau Veritas works with thoroughness and professionalism, but also their great passion for working with the SDGs, was a clear strength to be challenged as a company and create a structured change process," Jesper Bonde concludes.
